Wasted $400 on a 'self-leveling' mud mixer that just spun air into the bucket
Had to scrap a whole 5-gallon batch on a big ceiling job in Tempe because it was full of bubbles and set up like foam, anyone know a mixer that actually works for topping compound?

Ugh, does the foam mean I get to call it a cappuccino ceiling now? Been there, that exact sound of hope leaving your body when you hear that whipping noise. I gave up on the fancy mixers too, just a basic spiral hook on the slowest setting my drill has. It feels wrong going that slow, but it's the only way to not make fluffy disaster soup.

Switched to a spiral dough hook on a regular heavy duty drill after my paddle mixer did the same thing. The key is slow speed, like barely turning, and you have to keep the hook fully buried. That foam mess is the worst, lost a whole day once. A good low rpm drill and a spiral mixer head from the hardware store saved me.
