Walked into a new build last Tuesday and saw the worst corner bead install I've ever seen

The guy used paper faced bead on all the outside corners and didn't even bother to wipe down the mud before it dried. It was cracking and peeling before the painter even showed up. Has anyone else seen this kind of shortcut on a big job and had to redo the whole thing?

Paper faced corners on a big job are just asking for trouble later.

You're right, paper faced corners on a big job are a gamble that usually doesn't pay off. It's like using cheap tape on a moving box that's packed too tight. The whole building shifts and breathes over time, windows, doors, all of it. Paper just can't keep up with that kind of constant movement, it will crack or bubble eventually. I see the same thing with caulk in bathrooms, people use the cheap stuff and wonder why it peels off in six months. Bigger spaces just have more stress on every seam and joint, so you need materials that can handle that load.

Whoa, hold on, that's a good point but I think the real issue is how paper faced corners handle expansion and contraction in different seasons. On a big job, you have more seams and more chances for that paper to wrinkle or bubble up when the humidity changes. The bigger the building, the more movement you get in the framing, and paper just can't stretch like a metal bead can. Has anyone ever tried using a hybrid system with a flexible compound around those corners instead of just sticking with a standard paper bead?
