The one thing I see new guys mess up on every ceiling job

I was helping a crew in Springfield finish a big house last month, and three different guys kept putting the first screw too close to the edge of the board. It was always about a half inch in, not the proper 5/8 inch. That might not sound like much, but it's a sure way to get a crack along the seam after a few seasons. How do you all train new helpers to get that first fastener placement right every single time?

Exactly, I've had to fix that same mistake on so many callbacks it's not even funny.

Mark the tape measure with a sharpie at the 5/8 spot. I tell the new guy that's his new best friend and he can't put a screw down without checking it. Muscle memory is useless if you learn it wrong from the start.

Sharpie on the tape is the only way.
