Showerthought: The one day I forgot my taping knives at home turned into the smoothest ceiling finish I've ever done
I showed up to a job site in Phoenix last Thursday without any of my tools, had to borrow a beat-up 6-inch knife from a buddy who does stucco, and somehow managed to mud a whole living room ceiling better than I have in 10 years - has anyone else ever had a disaster turn into your best work for no reason?

Man, I've been there. Sometimes having less to work with forces you to keep things simple. That beat up 6-inch knife probably made you work slower and more deliberate, which is exactly what you need for a smooth ceiling. I've noticed when I grab my expensive 12-inch blade I get too aggressive and leave ridges. The cheap tools make you pay attention to your angle and pressure.

That 6-inch knife forces you to do smaller passes too, which really helps hide your mud seams. The big blades just tempt you to cover too much ground and end up chasing your own work around.
