My wife said my taping looked like a 'nervous spiderweb' on our living room ceiling.

She was right, I was using way too much pressure on the knife and leaving thick ridges everywhere. I switched to lighter passes with a 6-inch taping knife and the finish is way smoother now. Anyone else get a funny critique that actually helped?

Oh man, that's a perfect way to put it. My dad called my first mud job "textured by a gorilla." Light touch is everything... it's so easy to press too hard when you're new. That spiderweb line would stick in my head forever.

Hah, my partner said my first attempt looked like a toddler finger-painted the wall. That light touch is a total game changer.

Oh my gosh, YES. My buddy was helping his sister paint and she told him his cut-in line looked like a "drunk seismograph reading." He was trying to go way too fast and his hand was all shaky. It's like what @karenw90 said, you have to slow down and relax your grip. He practiced on some cardboard first and it came out perfect. That one silly comment totally fixed his technique.
