My mud pan cracked clean in half yesterday when I dropped it from a second story lift in Denver.
I had to finish the seam with a 6-inch knife and a piece of scrap drywall, which my buddy said looked like I was trying to butter toast with a shovel.

Buttering toast with a shovel is a perfect way to put it. I've patched a pan with a piece of metal flashing and thinset before, just to get through the day. Sometimes you just have to make it work.
