I finally saw the drywall in that new hotel downtown and it's a mess

I was in the lobby of the new Riverfront Inn last week and the ceiling joints are already cracking. You can see the tape lines through the paint, and the corner beads look like they were slapped on. It's a high-end spot, so you know they paid for it, but the finish work is rough. How does a crew let that slide on a big public job?

That's not drywall, that's the plaster finish.

Had a place like that where the mud was way too thin. We ended up sanding it all back down and using a heavier mix for the final coat. A good primer before painting can hide a lot of sins too, but you gotta fix the big stuff first. It's a pain but it's the only way to get it smooth.
