Yeah, that "trash rack upstream" is a classic weak spot. I read a case study where a plant added a simple pressure sensor before the rack, like river182 hinted at with a camera. It gives you an early heads-up before things get bad.

Saw a video where a crew just ties a plastic bag to the rack. If it stops moving, you know the flow is blocked.
