Old timer at my shop told me to stop using digital calipers for rough cuts

Been drafting for about 8 years now and always used my Mitutoyo digital calipers for everything, even just checking a 2x4 dimension. This guy Frank who's been doing this since the 80s told me I was wearing them out for no reason. He showed me his old school dial calipers he uses for quick checks instead. After 6 months of trying it his way, my digital set still reads perfectly and I haven't had to replace the battery once. Anyone else got a coworker who changed how you work with a simple tip?

Frank's got a point about battery wear from constant on-off cycling, but those Mitutoyos are tanks if you store them right. I keep a cheap plastic caliper in my apron for rough lumber and save the good one for finish work.

Wait, you keep a plastic caliper in your apron for rough lumber? Like, the same one you use for finish work gets swapped out? That's wild, lol. I'd be too scared I'd grab the wrong one by accident and mess up a measurement.
