Last month I switched to manual drafting for a project and it took 3 times longer - is there still a place for hand drawing in professional work?

Doesn't @susanh46 use tracing paper for rough drafts which might save you time?

My hand drafting looks like a kindergartner on caffeine, so I'm clearly not the one to defend it. But when I need to really think through a layout without software distractions, there is no faster way. Sometimes the extra time forces you to understand the problem better.

Tracing paper helped my hand drafting more than anything else @nora10, lets you rough things out without ruining the sheet underneath. I started doing my bubble diagrams and early massing studies on tracing paper with just a pencil, then only switch to digital once the idea is solid. Forces you to commit to a flow instead of getting lost in layers and undo buttons.
