I was checking out the old courthouse renovation downtown and noticed they kept all the original steel beam details in the drawings.

Remember the old brass door plates they saved in our library project?

Yeah, that's a solid move. We had a client who insisted on keeping the old brick archways in a warehouse conversion. The drawings showed every chip and color variation. It added so much more character than just a plain new wall. That kind of detail makes the final space feel real, not just like a copy. What other details did they keep?

Actually, those are probably cast iron columns, not steel beams, for a building that old. @sagey69 is right about the character though, and showing every detail in the drawings is the only way to make sure it gets built right. It forces the contractor to actually look at and save what's already there.
