A contractor in Charlotte told me my 2D shop drawings were costing him time on site

He said 'I can't build what I can't see' and it hit different because I've been skipping the 3D model for 'simple' jobs. Anyone else get called out like that?

My last simple deck job had five change orders.

Oh man, that's a tough lesson to learn. I've been there, thinking a flat drawing was enough for a basic deck or a simple wall frame. Then the crew shows up and has three questions before lunch, all because a beam detail wasn't clear. That contractor is right, it saves everyone a headache to just build the model first, even for the jobs that seem straightforward. It feels like extra work upfront, but it pays off.

That whole "feels like extra work upfront, but it pays off" thing is just how reality works in a lot of areas, not just building stuff. It's the same reason nobody reads the instructions first or checks the tire pressure until something breaks. Everyone wants to skip the boring prep work because it feels like you're wasting time when nothing is broken yet. But that extra 30 minutes of planning or modeling or whatever always saves you from spending three hours fixing a mess later. It's a hard habit to learn because our brains are wired to fix problems right now, not prevent them tomorrow.
