Used to patch drywall holes with spackle and hope, now I use California patches every time
I saw it on a YouTube channel last fall. The metal mesh with the paper flap. Cut the hole square, slide it in, mud over the paper. No more cracking after three days. My first one took 20 minutes. Now I can do one in five. Has anyone else tried these for bigger holes, like fist sized?

Maybe that toddler was just trying to give you some "real world" stress testing. At least now you know it can handle a direct impact.

Cut the hole square, slide it in" - yeah, that's what I said about my first attempt too. Took me three tries before I realized you gotta slap the mud on thick and let it sit overnight. Otherwise you're just making a mess.
I did a fist-sized hole in my kids' bedroom last month. Worked fine but the mesh sagged a bit. Had to do a second coat. My toddler bumped into it while it was drying and I almost lost it.
