Spent 4 hours patching drywall only to mess up the texture

the hole was maybe 6 inches across but after all that work it looked worse than when I started. Second time around I used setting compound instead of premix and it held up way better. Still ended up with a weird smooth patch in a popcorn ceiling though. How do you guys blend new texture into old without making a mess?

Have you tried using a texture spray can from the hardware store? They're not perfect but way easier than trying to match popcorn by hand.

@faith_lopez48 you'd think the spray cans would be a quick fix but the real headache is getting the pressure right. I watched a guy on YouTube dial his in with a bowl of water and some scrap drywall first. Did you have to mess with the nozzle angle at all to get close to your ceiling pattern?
