Showerthought: I was using way too much wood glue on my joints

I was putting together a simple pine bookshelf last week and slathered glue on every tenon like it was peanut butter. My buddy, who's a cabinet maker, stopped by, looked at the squeeze-out, and just said, 'You're making a mess and wasting your money.' He showed me how a thin, even coat is actually stronger because it doesn't create a slippery barrier that stops the wood from touching. I wiped off half of what I'd put on. Has anyone else had a pro point out a basic thing you were totally overdoing?

Seriously though, is a little extra glue that big of a deal?

Ever see a glue joint fail? Too much glue makes a weak layer that can crack. A thin coat bonds the wood itself, which is way stronger.

My last DIY project looked like a glue monster attacked it.
