PSA: I almost replaced my fridge compressor until I tried this one stupid trick

My 10 year old GE fridge stopped cooling on Tuesday. I had the compressor kit in my cart - $180 and a full afternoon of work. Then a buddy from work told me to check the start relay first. 15 bucks at Ace Hardware, slid it in and the fridge kicked right back on. Has anyone else dealt with a fridge that just clicks but won't start?

Yeah the click of death is exactly what I had too. Scared me at first because I thought my compressor was shot. But that clicking sound is just the relay trying to engage and failing. I watched a quick YouTube video and had it swapped in like 5 minutes. Crazy how a tiny $15 part can save you from buying a whole new fridge or spending hours on a compressor swap.

Bro that's a solid tip. I've seen way too many people toss out a perfectly good fridge just because they didn't know about the relay trick. The click of death is usually a dead giveaway it's not the compressor.

Did your buddy mention if the fridge was making a humming sound first? That happened to my friend Mike with his old Whirlpool. He heard a low hum for like a day, then the clicking started. He was already looking at new fridges on Facebook Marketplace. I told him to try the relay first since it was a cheap fix. He got one from an appliance parts store for like 12 bucks and it fired right up. Saved him a ton of hassle.
