My kitchen sink drain started backing up again last Tuesday
I pulled the trap apart and found a solid clog of grease and coffee grounds about six inches into the pipe. I tried a plunger and a cheap plastic snake from the hardware store, but it just pushed the mess further in. Now the water is draining slower than before. Has anyone had luck with a specific type of auger for this, or should I just call a plumber?

Solid clog of grease and coffee grounds" sounds exactly like my old apartment's signature move.

My old building's super swore by a 25-foot manual drum auger with a quarter-inch cable for exactly this. That cheap plastic snake is useless against a grease plug, it just makes a bigger problem further down the line. You need something with a real cutting head to chew through and grab that mess. Rent the good tool for an hour before you call a plumber, it might save you three hundred bucks.
