My door hinge fix just made everything noisier

I saw a quick video saying to oil a squeaky hinge, so I grabbed some from the garage. Sprayed it on like they showed, but now the squeak is way louder, lmao. There's a gross oily mess on the floor too, which I have to clean up. I feel like the tutorial left out a step or something. Now the door sounds worse than when I started. What a waste of a Saturday morning, honestly.

But like, is a noisy door even that big of a deal? Sure the mess is annoying, but it's just a sound. Sometimes these home fix things get blown way out of proportion. You could probably just wipe the hinge down hard to clear some gunk and call it a day. It's a door, not a car engine. People act like every little household thing is a Major Project.

Honestly it's not about the noise, it's about the feeling. A smooth quiet door just makes a house feel solid and cared for. That squeak every time you come home late or check on the kids becomes a tiny daily annoyance. Fixing it takes two minutes with some oil and a rag, and then you get that satisfaction every single time you use it. Why live with a small bother when the fix is so easy?

Thought oil was the whole fix too until mine did the same thing. Someone told me you have to wipe off the old gunk first or the new oil just pushes grit around. Tried cleaning it before re-oiling and the squeak actually went away for good.

Wait, did you spray the oil right onto the dirty hinge without cleaning it first? That's probably why it's louder, you just made oily mud in there. I get what @evanj59 is saying about it not being a huge deal, but a loud door is honestly more annoying than a quiet squeak. You should try what craig.reese said and wipe all the old gunk out with a rag, then put a tiny bit of fresh oil on the pin. It's a messy job but it actually works.
