My $15 soldering iron fix saved a $200 board

I heard a guy at the hardware store say most electronics repairs are just bad solder joints. He was right - I spent 20 minutes reflowing a cracked joint on my washing machine's control board and it's been running fine for 3 weeks now. Anyone else have luck fixing stuff with just a cheap iron?

Have you ever actually had a joint that LOOKED perfect under magnification but still failed after a few months? Been burned by that myself, cold joints are obvious but the sneaky ones drive me crazy. What's the trick you use to catch borderline joints before they become headaches?
