Just realized I've been using my stud finder wrong for like 5 years

Was hanging a heavy shelf in the kitchen yesterday and kept getting a false reading, so I grabbed my neighbor Jim to help troubleshoot. He took one look at me and said "you're supposed to put it flat against the drywall, not hold it at an angle like a magic wand." Has anyone else gone years making a basic tool way harder than it needs to be?

Oh man, that's hilarious lmao. I actually have one small thing to add though - you probably weren't holding it like a magic wand wrong, you might've just had the battery dying or something. Those things are super sensitive to dead batteries and will just give false readings all over the place. I learned that after I threw my first one across the garage in frustration lol. Next time try fresh batteries before you grab Jim, even if it feels fine it might be lying to you.

Bet you're wrong @west.alice, dead batteries never caused my meter to act like that even once.
