Fixed a leaky toilet flapper with a $3 part instead of replacing the whole thing

My toilet was running constantly for like 2 months before I finally looked inside and saw the flapper was just crusty. Grabbed a new one at Home Depot for $3 and it's been silent ever since. Anyone else ever put off a tiny fix like that way too long?

You said "totally changed how I look at plumbing now" and that's exactly what I felt after I did mine. What took you so long to finally ask your buddy about it? I'm just curious because I let mine run for two months before I even lifted the lid. Was it a pride thing where you thought you should already know how to fix it, or did you just not want to deal with it? Sometimes I think we make these little problems seem bigger in our heads than they really are.

Honestly used to think replacing the whole damn toilet was the only way. Figured the gasket or whatever was shot and you had to just swap it. But a buddy at work told me the same thing you did. $3 part, five minutes of work, done. Totally changed how I look at plumbing now. It's wild how quick and cheap it can be if you just look at the actual problem first.
