That lady at the hardware store told me to use a pilot bit on my studs and I ignored her

Snapped three bits trying to hang shelves in my garage last Saturday before I gave in and grabbed a pilot bit set. Now I'm wondering how many other basic tips I've been blowing off - anyone else stubbornly skip advice they heard from a stranger?

Ignoring random advice is like thinking you're too good for the easy way.

...well I heard something the other day that kinda goes against this whole idea. There was this guy on a podcast talking about how most random advice is just noise because people don't know your full situation. He said it's not about being too good for the easy way, it's about knowing when advice actually fits what you're dealing with. I mean I've definitely ignored plenty of random tips from folks who had no clue about the details of my life. Sometimes that easy way they're selling just leads to a bigger mess down the road. Makes you wonder how many people got burned by following bad advice from strangers who meant well but didn't know anything.
