Tried to Dremel a fan grille and melted half my case panel
I was in my garage last Saturday cutting out a custom 140mm fan hole in a steel case I got off Craigslist for $20. The bit grabbed the metal and basically welded a strip of plastic trim to the side panel before I could let off. Had to stop, file down the melted mess, and now I'm stuck covering it with a cheap mesh grille from Micro Center. Anyone else have a rotary tool disaster that forced a design change?

Wait you melted a plastic trim strip on a steel case? How is that even possible? @faith_lopez48 don't see that happening just from user error.

Dude, did you at least save the panel from getting completely wrecked? I’ve been there with a Dremel and a cheap case before, it’s like the tool just has a mind of its own sometimes (or maybe it’s my shaky hands). I melted a fan guard onto a side window once, and I ended up having to sand it down and paint over it, which looked terrible for weeks. That mesh from Micro Center is actually a solid fix, it hides the scars and gives it a kind of industrial look, you know? You’re not alone in the rotary tool rage club, I swear every project has one of those moments.
