My buddy swore by using a jigsaw for cutting acrylic side panels

A friend from work told me a jigsaw would be fine for cutting a window in my case. I tried it on a $25 sheet of tinted acrylic and it chipped and cracked around every curve. He insisted his method worked, but I should have stuck with a scoring knife and straight edge like the forums suggested. Has anyone else had luck with a specific blade type for acrylic panels?

My first attempt at cutting acrylic was a disaster. I used a cheap jigsaw blade from a hardware store on a 3mm panel and it shattered in about 30 seconds. Ended up ordering a set of fine-tooth blades online with these little teeth that are like 10 TPI or something. Cut through that stuff like butter on my second try. But I still prefer using a scoring knife for straight cuts. The jigsaw leaves a rough edge even with the right blade.
