I built a wooden case frame expecting it to be flimsy and dark inside, but after 6 coats of matte polyurethane and some white LED strips it actually looks cleaner than my old Fractal case.

Man, I get that completely. I spent a weekend putting together a plywood case for my old parts and was bracing for it to look like a cardboard box inside. But after sanding and hitting it with a few coats of that same poly, the wood grain just pops. And those LED strips you mentioned make a huge difference, I did the same thing and now the reflections off the gloss finish actually make the whole thing look way more premium than it should. It still weirdly stuns me every time I look over at it sitting on the desk.

Nah, poly kills the natural feel of the wood for me. I'd rather leave it raw.
