Switched from a cheap LED shop light to a proper fluorescent fixture in my garage workshop last month and the difference is unreal
For years I was using this $20 LED strip light from the big box store. Thought it was fine. Then my 65 year old neighbor came by to borrow a wrench and said he couldn't see a thing. He talked me into swapping to an old school 4 foot T8 fluorescent fixture I found at a salvage place for $12. Colors actually look right now and no more weird flicker that gave me headaches. Has anyone else noticed how bad those cheap LEDs are for detailed work?

Difference is unreal" - yeah, your neighbor basically told you your workshop was a cave and you had no idea. Cheap LEDs are great for lighting up a closet but trying to do real work under them is like squinting through fog. Did your headaches actually stop after the swap or was that just me imagining things?

Did you notice a difference with fine detail work too @charlesj46, or was it mostly the headaches that tipped you off? I've been thinking about swapping my garage lights but I'm worried the CRI ratings are just marketing fluff. Always hard to tell if an upgrade is actually worth it until you've already spent the money.
