Buddy swore by self-leveling compound on my sloped kitchen floor, I was dead wrong about leveling the whole thing

My buddy Mike told me to just use self-leveling compound on the low spots in my kitchen instead of trying to level the entire 12x15 foot floor. I thought he was nuts and spent 3 hours mixing and pouring a full coat, ended up with a 1/4 inch thick mess near the back door. He stopped by, showed me how to feather it in just the sunken areas near the fridge, and the tile lay flat in 20 minutes. Has anyone else found that less compound actually works better for older houses?

Yeah that thing about feathering it in is key, I had a similar mess trying to coat my whole 100 year old dining room. Mixing a thinner batch and just hitting the low spots saved me from a lumpy disaster near the baseboards. Less is definitely more when your subfloor has settled unevenly over time.

Oh man, I feel your pain. I tried to level my entire mudroom once and ended up with a floor that looked like a mini skate park. Turns out my "can do" attitude was way more ambitious than my actual skill level. Who knew that reading the bag directions twice would still lead to a quarter inch hump near the stove?
