Read online that modding saves money on old games... they LIED to me

I saw some post claiming you can just grab free mods and turn a $5 Steam sale game into a AAA experience. So I grabbed a 2014 RPG for 4 bucks and spent the last 3 weeks trying to get a texture pack to work without crashing on startup. Between patching conflicts, missing dependencies, and watching 8 youtube guides I finally got it running but it still stutters like crazy. I probably put 20 hours into this and the base game was fine for what it cost. Was this just a ME problem or do these 'easy mod' promises always blow up on folks?

Heard some modders spend more time fixing stuff than actually playing the games they mod.

Damn, modding is like buying a fixer-upper house thinking you'll save money then realizing you need a whole new foundation. The real savings comes from finding the one guy who already did all the work and packaged it up nice, not trying to build it yourself from scratch.
