Thought I could fix a wobbly ceiling fan in an hour, ended up with a hole in my drywall and a 3 day project.

How did you even manage to put a hole in the drywall from a fan wobble? That sounds like a way bigger problem than just balancing the blades. I have fixed a few wobbly fans and it never got close to that level of damage. Maybe the mounting box was already loose in the ceiling.

My uncle had a fan shake loose from a cheap plastic ceiling box once. The whole unit dropped a few inches and scraped the ceiling pretty bad. A wobbly fan can definitely find a weak spot in the mounting over time.

Forget the fan blades for a second... the real danger is the wobble shaking the electrical connections loose inside the box over years. I saw a friend's place where the constant vibration wore through the wire insulation and almost caused a fire. @wade558 is right that a solid box is key, but that shaking finds every single weak point eventually.
