Pro tip: Stop using drywall screws for hanging things on plaster walls
Had a shelf come crashing down in my living room in Seattle last Tuesday at 2am. Scared the heck out of my cat. I was using drywall screws like I always did for sheetrock. Took me 3 trips to Home Depot before the old timer in the hardware aisle finally pointed out that plaster needs different anchors. He literally said 'son you're gonna take a chunk out of your wall every time.' Now I gotta patch a 6 inch hole. Anyone else learn this the hard way with old buildings?

Ripped a towel rack clean off the wall in my 1920s apartment in Boston. Landlord walked in and saw the hole. Grinned at me. Said "welcome to old buildings, kid." Now I use those toggle bolts for everything. Even coat hooks. No more surprises.
