My uncle's advice about using a level for shelving was apparently optional
He told me just eyeball it, level is for perfectionists. Six shelves and a cracked mug later, I spent $12 on a level from Home Depot. Anyone else have a relative give bad DIY advice that cost you more in the end?

Yeah @lewis.diana, but sometimes trusting your eyes just means buying more mugs later on.

But isn't there something to be said for trusting your own eyes and learning from mistakes...? That cracked mug probably taught you more about angles and gravity than a level ever could. Sometimes the best lessons come from busted shelves and wasted money, not perfect results from a store-bought tool.
