My 'quick' deck stain job turned into a 3-day paint stripping marathon

Used a cheap roller from the hardware store and the stain went on so thick it looked like tar and never dried properly. Has anyone else had a finish go completely wrong because of the applicator?

Cheap rollers can wreck the finish before you even start.

Yeah, that line about it changing how you buy tools really hit me... it's like a small lesson that applies to so much stuff. I've started noticing it with kitchen gear too, where the cheap version just makes the job harder and wastes your time. It feels like we're trained to go for the bargain first, but sometimes that cost ends up being your own effort.

That "tar" look is exactly what happened to me. I always thought a roller was a roller, and the cheap ones were fine for something like stain. I learned the hard way that the cheap foam soaks up way too much product and just plasters it on. It completely changed how I buy tools for any project now. I will spend the extra few dollars on a decent brush or a proper nap roller every single time.
