My neighbor watched me hang drywall and said 'you're doing it backwards'
I was working on finishing my basement in Columbus, Ohio, and thought I had watched enough YouTube videos to hang drywall by myself. After about an hour, my neighbor Bob walked over from next door and just stood there watching. He finally said 'you're hanging those sheets backwards, the tapered edges need to meet in the middle.' I had been putting the factory edges against each other instead of staggering them for the joints. He spent the next 20 minutes showing me how to properly measure and cut around outlets, and I ended up taking down three sheets I had already screwed in. Has anyone else had a neighbor or friend step in with advice that completely changed how you approach a basic job?

The part about the tapered edges meeting in the middle got me. I was building a deck and my dad watched me for a solid 10 minutes before he said "son, you got those joist hangers upside down." I had put every single one of them in with the little lip facing up instead of down. Had to take all 12 off and flip them. Made me feel like an idiot but at least I didn't have to tear down any deck boards like you did with the drywall.
