My brother in law took one look at my deck and said “what were you thinking”
I spent like 3 weekends last summer building a raised deck off my back door. Used some leftover treated lumber from a construction site nearby. Thought I was being smart saving money. My brother in law came over for a cookout and just stared at it. Then he pointed out I put the joists way too far apart. Like 30 inches instead of 16. He said “this thing is gonna sag under a lawn chair let alone a grill.” I was so mad at first but he was right. After he left I walked on it and could feel it bounce. Tore the whole thing apart and rebuilt it proper with the right spacing and some Simpson ties he recommended. Cost me an extra $60 but now it feels solid. Has anyone else had a relative just absolutely roast their DIY work and then turn out to be totally correct?

Oh jeez, at least your brother in law was right - mine just laughed at my crooked fence for two years before I finally fixed it.

Family can be SO useless sometimes. My uncle kept telling me my gutters were fine for three years while water was eroding my foundation. Finally got a roofer out and he said it looked like a swimming pool up there. Now I tell them all to just keep their opinions to themselves until they can actually help.
