My $15 shelving project turned into a $200 wall repair
I thought I could put up some floating shelves in my living room last weekend without checking for studs. After the third shelf ripped out of the drywall and smashed my coffee table, I finally bought a stud finder from Home Depot. The before was a mess of spackle patches and the after is shelves that actually stay up. Now I'm out $215 and three bruised toes. Has anyone else learned this lesson the expensive way?

Used to roll my eyes at people who acted like you needed a PhD to hang a picture, but after a similar drywall disaster I completely changed my tune. Holly_gonzalez61 put it perfectly with that towel rack story, a few minutes of checking for studs saves you hours of patching holes. Now I'm the one telling everyone to stop being stubborn and just buy the damn stud finder.

Oh man, I did the exact same thing with a towel rack and totally destroyed my bathroom wall.
