Hit 47 drywall screws in one stud and still had to patch the hole anyway

I was hanging a shelf in my garage last weekend and must have hit the same stud 47 times with my stud finder before drilling. Every single time the finder beeped, I marked a spot. Then I drilled and those marks were everywhere. The shelf ended up crooked because I used three different marks and missed the stud entirely on one. Now I got a 2 inch wide hole to patch and the shelf is sitting on the floor. What's the most screws you've put into a single wall and still messed it up?

Hmm, "impressive dedication" feels a bit harsh... I actually think they were onto something valid, just might've explained it poorly.
