Appreciation post: The warehouse staff at IKEA who let me test clamp their display desks
I went to the one in Portland last month to look at cable trays and ended up spending 20 minutes talking with the floor guy about their Bekant frame. He actually pulled out a spare clamp for the cable management net so I could see how it mounts before buying, and that little demo saved me from drilling three holes in the wrong spot. Has anyone else gotten lucky with a helpful employee showing you a hack on the spot?

Right, that bit about the demo "saving three holes in the wrong spot" really hits home. But here's something nobody brings up - those employees are basically giving you free engineering advice that IKEA doesn't officially train them to give. That guy pulled a spare clamp because he knew the manual is pure garbage, not because the company told him to. They're just regular folks who've built twenty of those desks themselves and figured out all the tricks the hard way. So when you get that kind of help, you're actually getting insider knowledge that the store can't even put in a training video.

Hang on @the_mason, I gotta push back a little here. See, the fact that employees have to learn workarounds on their own is actually proof the system is failing, not a hidden perk. If a company sells a product that literally requires secret tricks just to assemble correctly, that's bad design, not free insider knowledge. Those workers shouldn't have to be your personal hackers... they should be able to point to the manual and say "follow this." Relying on random store staff to know the unofficial fixes just encourages IKEA to keep releasing broken instructions, since they know people will figure it out anyway.
