Went to a vintage amp meet in Nashville last month

Saw a guy there with a 1965 Fender Deluxe Reverb. Looked clean but sounded flat. He'd swapped all the original caps for modern ones. I asked why. He said 'reliability.' For me, that killed the character. Has anyone else found that replacing old caps smooths out the grit too much?

Reliability" sure, until you realize your vintage amp now sounds like a modern pedal board. I'd rather have a little hum and some character than a sterile clean tone that could come from any cheap solid state. Guess he's trading soul for peace of mind, and that's a bad deal in my book.

Ground lift switch on the amp fixed that hum for me.
