Unpopular opinion: matched tube sets are a waste of money

I dropped $120 on a matched quad of EL84s for my 18-watt build, and honestly, I can't hear a difference from the $40 unmatched set I had in there before. My buddy says matched tubes reduce hum and help the amp bias evenly, which makes sense on paper. But in my living room at normal volumes, it's just not noticeable to me. I'm starting to think the whole matching thing is more of a marketing gimmick for guys with way better ears than mine. Has anyone else done a blind test on this and come to a different conclusion?

Wait, did your buddy's wife do the swap too? That's basically what happened with me and my brother. He switched out tubes on my 5e3 Deluxe while I was turned around and I guessed wrong four out of five times. The one time I got it right I was positive I heard a difference but turns out the unmatched set just had one tube that was a little quieter so it sounded more balanced to my ears. The matching really only matters if you're pushing the amp into breakup hard and even then it's subtle.

My buddy Dan actually did a blind test at his shop last year and he swore he could pick out the matched set every time. He had his wife swap tubes while he played and honestly he got it wrong more often than not. After like three tries he said man maybe I'm just hearing things. The kicker was the unmatched set actually had less hiss on the high strings in his setup. So yeah I'm with you on this one unless you're cranking it through a 4x12 at band practice or something.
