That one forum guy told me to ditch the 12AX7 for a 12AY7. He was spot on.
I have been fighting a super harsh high end on my 5E3 build for like 3 weeks. Changed caps, swapped resistors, nothing helped. Then some user named TubeSnob69 said to just try a 12AY7 in V1 since it has less gain and smoother breakup. I swapped it in and the amp went from icepick city to actually usable at band practice volume. Has anyone else had a single tube swap quiet a noisy build like that?

Cleans up sooner" is fancy talk for "now I can actually roll my volume knob without it going from 0 to face-melting in a millimeter lol.

Man, isn't it wild how one little tube swap can totally change the whole personality of an amp? I had a similar thing with a Princeton Reverb build that just would not stop humming until I pulled the 12AX7 out of the reverb driver spot and put a 12AT7 in there. Did you notice if the 12AY7 changed the feel of the amp when you dig in, like does it clean up sooner with your guitar volume rolled back?
