Found an old schematic from 1972 that flipped my whole approach
Was digging through a box of my dad's stuff last weekend in Des Moines and found his hand-drawn schematic for a 6V6 stereo amp he built in college. It had a 12AX7 driver stage with a 470k grid resistor right off the plate, something I'd never seen in any modern plans. I always thought bigger coupling caps were the way to go, but his notes showed he swapped 0.022uF in there for a cleaner mid punch, and now I'm reworking my current build to try it. Anyone else got old gear that made you rethink what you thought you knew?

Found a 1967 Telefunken service manual in my uncle's basement that had a similar thing, bias resistor values way off from anything modern. It got me thinking about how a lot of what we call "upgrades" are just trends. Same with guitar pedals, people chase the newest thing but the old circuits hold up because they were built around the actual parts available, not what someone's trying to sell you now. Makes you wonder what other stuff we've overcomplicated. Now I'm checking old schematics before I tweak anything.
