TIL a simple content audit saved my blog traffic from falling off a cliff

I run a small fitness blog on the side, nothing fancy, maybe 500 visitors a day. Last month I noticed my traffic dropped about 30% and I couldn't figure out why. I checked analytics and saw a bunch of old posts from 2021 were just sitting there with broken links and outdated info. So I spent two weekends updating them - fixed the links, added current research, refreshed the titles. Now those same posts are pulling in more traffic than they ever did before. Has anyone else found that old content can outrank new stuff if you just clean it up a bit?

Heard a podcast say Google loves updated content way more than brand new stuff.

Google actually came out and said fresh content doesn't automatically get a boost. They care more about relevance and usefulness than the publish date. A link post from 2021 with solid info can still beat a newer shallow post in their algorithm. On my own site I had an old how-to guide from 2018 that kept dropping. Instead of rewriting it, I just updated a few stats and fixed some formatting. It jumped back to page one within two weeks. The date change helped but the real fix was making the content better. Refreshing old posts works because you're improving what's already proven. New content is a gamble every time.
