Stop pretending coworking spaces are a write-off without checking local laws first
I watched a buddy get hit with a $1,200 tax penalty last year because his city doesn't count coworking memberships as a deductible expense for remote workers. He found out during an audit and now he's stuck fighting it. Has anyone else run into this kind of surprise from their local tax rules?

Guessed that was just a standard thing everyone could write off until a CPA friend set me straight last month. Turns out my state only allows it if your coworking spot is your "principal place of business" which mine definitely isn't. Changed my whole filing approach and now I'm just glad I found out before doing taxes instead of during an audit like your buddy.

Three grand here in California if you get it wrong and they decide to flag you... Honestly though, a $1,200 penalty sounds rough but that's like two months of membership at a decent spot. I'd probably just roll the dice again and hope the audit odds stay low.
