Rant: DIY vs paid SEO tools for local keyword research is honestly no contest

I spent 3 months manually digging through Google Search Console and free keyword planners for my client's bakery in Portland, and their traffic barely budged. Then I dropped $20 on a proper local SEO tool for one month and found 40 long-tail keywords the free stuff never showed, like 'gluten-free birthday cakes near me.' Has anyone else found that free tools just miss the real gold for local searches?

Give me a sec while I go cry into my free keyword planner spreadsheet that took me three weeks to build and still couldn't find anyone searching for 'vegan donuts Portland.' I swear the free tools just show you the most basic stuff like 'bakery' and call it a day, meanwhile the paid tool found me someone looking for 'sugar free cakes for diabetics in SE Portland' which is honestly so specific it felt like cheating.

That 40 long-tail keywords in one month stat is wild - what was that tool's approach for surfacing 'near me' modifiers?" I am wondering if the free tools just lean too heavily on broad volume metrics that miss those hyper-local search patterns. Did you notice if the paid tool was pulling from actual Google Business Profile queries, or something else entirely?
