A/B testing headlines vs descriptions in Google Ads? Headlines won every time for me
I spent about 6 months trying to optimize my ad copy for a local roofing client in Austin. I kept tweaking the description lines hoping for a better click-through rate. After running a proper split test over 3 weeks though, the headlines were clearly doing 90% of the heavy lifting. The descriptions barely moved the needle no matter what I changed. Has anyone else found a specific ad element that just dominates the results?

Wait, wait wait... 90% of the heavy lifting? That's crazy to me because I always thought the description was where you really sell the click, you know? I had almost the opposite problem with my own little Etsy shop last year - I rewrote my headlines like 20 times and nothing changed, but then I swapped one description line to say "fast shipping guaranteed" and my CTR jumped almost 40% in two weeks. Maybe it's different for local service businesses since people are probably already looking for a roofer and just need a reason to pick yours over the others?

Yeah that 40% jump from just "fast shipping guaranteed" is wild. I think local service is different though - people aren't browsing, they're picking from google results so headlines matter more for getting the click.
