Just saw a 30% drop in my site's traffic after a core update last week

It happened right after Google's March update rolled out, and I'm still trying to figure out which change caused it. Anyone else seeing big swings and have a clue what to check first?

My buddy Mark runs a local history blog that lost almost half its traffic after the September update. He spent weeks checking his backlinks and technical stuff, but the real problem was that a bunch of his older posts just weren't useful anymore, they were like 300-word summaries when people now wanted deep answers. He went back and rewrote about twenty of those old articles, adding real research and fixing the questions people were actually asking. His traffic came back slowly over two months, but it taught him that sometimes the update just shines a light on content that's been weak for a long time.

Honestly, I see people blame every traffic drop on the latest update. Sometimes it's just a coincidence. Your site might have had underlying issues for months, like thin content or bad links, and the update just finally caught up to it. Jumping to blame Google means you might waste time looking in the wrong place. You should do a full site audit instead of just looking at the calendar date. In my experience, a sudden drop is usually a symptom of a problem that's been building.
