I thought those 'answer the public' keyword tools were just for making pretty graphs, but one actually gave me a solid ad idea last month

Solid ad idea" from a keyword tool? Those things just spit out what everyone else is already searching for. You're basically getting ideas that are already crowded and played out. How original can it be if a machine told a thousand other people the same thing? Seems like a fast track to generic ads.

Look at it as a starting point, not the final idea. A tool might show you "best running shoes," but that's just the raw search. Your ad isn't that. Your ad is why your shoes are best for, say, wet trails or wide feet. @ninas70, the trick is using that crowded keyword to find a smaller, specific group inside it. You see what many people want, then you make a message just for one part of that crowd. That's how you stand out in a busy space.
