I finally got rid of 12 years of duplicate photos, but paid $60 for the wrong app first

Spent $60 on a photo cleaner app that kept crashing on my old laptop. Wasted a whole Saturday. Then used the free built-in checker on my phone and killed 4,000 duplicates in about 2 hours. That app got refunded, but the damage to my patience is done. Has anyone else had luck with free tools over paid ones? I'm about to clear out my cloud storage next and I'm not falling for another paywall.
