PSA: Stop over-editing your shadows in digital paintings

I spent 6 months wondering why my character illustrations looked flat even after hours of shading. Turned out I was using pure black for shadows at like 90% opacity, which killed all the depth. Switched to using a deep desaturated blue at 40% opacity instead and the difference was night and day after just 3 tries. Has anyone else found a specific color shift that made their shadows pop?

Ngl I used to be all about using pure black for shadows because I thought it made things look dramatic, but you're totally right. Swapped to a dark purple-blue mix and my stuff actually looks 3D now.

Isn't it funny how the same rule applies to life, like not using harsh words to make a point?
