Overheard a gallery owner say 'stop overcomplicating your backgrounds'

I was at a local art walk last Friday and heard a gallery owner telling a digital artist that busy backgrounds kill sales. She said collectors want clean separation so the subject pops, not a whole scene. Has anyone else noticed better engagement with simpler backdrops in your showcase posts?

Oh man, you're probably right. I've definitely been guilty of making backgrounds way too busy because I thought it added value. I once spent three whole days painting a super detailed city skyline behind a portrait and the finished piece looked like a messy postcard. My own mom couldn't even find the person's face at first glance. Now I just throw in a simple gradient or a solid color block and call it a day. It's embarrassing how much better the results actually turn out when I stop trying so hard.

Yeah "busy backgrounds kill sales" sounds like gallery code for "your art looks like a Where's Waldo page." I guess collectors want their wine and cheese chatter uninterrupted by having to look at an actual scene. Maybe next time I'll just paint a floating head on a white wall and call it minimalist genius.
